William Ashmore Sheaffe (1860-1947)
William Ashmore, the eldest son of Percy Hale Sheaffe, was born and raised on the
family dairy farm at Yatte Yattah on NSW South Coast. In 1896 he moved to the Northern
Rivers District in search of good farming land and purchased some 500 acres of land
to become a prime dairy
farm, and settled at Goonengerry near Mullumbimby, on the North Coast of NSW. |

William Ashmore Sheaffe was considerably successful at his farming and business ventures and
purchased the first private separator in Northern NSW.
He was extremely active in local
affairs and was highly regarded in the community.
He married Cecil Nelson Percy
Whittall and raised five sons and one daughter on the Sheaffe Homestead at
Goonengerry. Many of his descendants
are still living in the area.

Percy owned and run a substantial bus company
at Mullumbimby for many years. Always keen gardeners and orchid enthusiast,
"retired" in 1969 and opened an orchid nursery at Brunswick Heads with June
an acclaimed florist.
A Rotary member of many years, Past District Governor & both Percy &

Bill operated a dairy and beef cattle farm on half the
Goonengerry homestead property until recently. He served in WW1940-45 in the
Middle East, Darwin & New Guinea. He has been a volunteer in the bush fire
brigade, Goonengerry School P&C, Bangalow Masonic Lodge member - all for
over 50 years! Bill taught Sunday School for 10 years, 6 years as a
councillor on Byron Shire Council & "Citizen Of The Year" once in Byron
Shire. |

Howard ran dairy cattle on half the original
property until a few years ago when it was subdivided with the family moved to
the Kyogle district establishing the only dairy property in the area
considered better than the original. They retired to Kyogle & eventually
Goonellabah. Always keen gardeners, particularly vegetables & show flowers,
Howard has been judging in NSW & Qld shows & events for over 60 years. |
